The wait is finally over! After years of anticipation,
speculation, and strategic negotiations, Tesla has officially set foot on
Indian soil, marking its grand entry with the inauguration of its first
showroom in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai. This is not just a showroom;
it's the "Tesla Experience Centre" located in the upscale Maker
Maxity Mall in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), a prime location that underscores
Tesla's premium positioning in the Indian market.
The grand opening was graced by Maharashtra Chief Minister
Devendra Fadnavis, who hailed Tesla's arrival as a transformative step for
India's electric mobility future. This move signals Tesla's serious intent to
tap into India's rapidly growing EV market, not just by selling cars, but by
establishing a comprehensive ecosystem including logistical networks, service
systems, and, critically, a robust charging infrastructure.
Leading Tesla's charge into India is the highly anticipated
Model Y. This popular mid-sized electric SUV, which has been a global
bestseller, is now available for Indian consumers, offered in two distinct
variants:
·
Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
·
Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD)
These initial offerings are imported as fully built units
from Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory, a strategic move to gauge market demand
before any potential local manufacturing commitments.
As expected, due to India's significant import duties and
logistics costs, the Model Y's pricing in India is higher than in many other
global markets. However, for those eager to own a piece of Tesla's future,
here's what to expect:
·
Tesla Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD): Rs 59.89 Lakh
·
Tesla Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (LR RWD): Rs 67.89 Lakh
It's important to note that these are ex-showroom prices.
Additional costs will include registration, insurance, and optional features.
For instance, the highly coveted Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability comes at an
extra cost of Rs 6 Lakh.
While the standard colour is Stealth Grey, buyers can opt for
other striking hues like Pearl White Multi-Coat, Diamond Black, Glacier Blue,
Quicksilver, and Ultra Red, which will incur additional costs ranging from Rs 95,000 to Rs 1.85 Lakh. Interior choices include the standard all-black theme or
a black and white interior for an extra Rs 95,000.
For those ready to embrace the electric revolution with a

Mumbai, with more cities expected to follow.

Tesla's entry into India is a significant moment for the
country's EV landscape. While the initial strategy focuses on imported models
and a premium retail experience, the company's long-term commitment will depend
on market reception and the evolving EV policy framework. The establishment of
"Experience Centres" and the planned rollout of Tesla's Supercharger
network across major cities like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai signal a comprehensive
approach to building brand presence and supporting its vehicles.
The Model Y's arrival is set to redefine the luxury EV
segment in India, intensifying competition and accelerating innovation in the
market. While not a mass-market offering, Tesla's presence is a strong
statement about the future of mobility in India, paving the way for a more
electrified tomorrow.
