The Meghalaya Government has prioritized accelerating
the adoption of electric vehicles in order to create a clean and green
environment in the state through the Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Policy 2021.
The Meghalaya Government intends to provide the necessary
impetus for the adoption of at least 15% EVs in Meghalaya over the next
five years by providing incentives to a limited number of early electric
vehicle adopters. During the Policy Period, Meghalaya aims to facilitate the
adoption of approximately 20,000 EVs, which will save approximately 50
lakh liters of fuel, resulting in a reduction of approximately 10,000 Kg
of CO2/Day, resulting in a reduction of approximately 36.5 lakh Kg
of CO2 per year.
·
All
types of electric vehicles purchased during the policy period will be exempt
from registration and road tax.
·
If
the government decides to implement an Odd-Even system for vehicle traffic in
order to reduce pollution, EVs will be exempt from this arrangement.
·
The
government will take appropriate steps to reserve parking spaces for EVs in
strategic locations.
A non-lapsable Meghalaya Electric Vehicle Adoption Fund (MEVAF)
will be established by the Nodal Agency. The applicable Pollution Cess
collected from the sale of diesel and gasoline shall be transferred to the
MEVAF as of the date of notification by the State Government. An additional
cess of 10 paise per liter of diesel and petrol introduced in Meghalaya is
expected to generate approximately Rs 5 crores in additional revenue each year.
